Painting Weekend at
Higham Hall

Friday, 25 July 2008

On Friday 25th of July 2008 I had the pleasure of teaching art to a group of eight delightful people at Higham Hall, “a beautifully restored 19th century Gothic mansion with well tended gardens and spectacular views of Skiddaw and the Northern Fells” in Cockermouth Cumbria.

All the students were from previous classes I have taught as a sessional art tutor at Liverpool Adult Learning services. Although the weather was overcast and very humid, it did not hinder the activities in any way apart from the pesky midges, it would have been nice to see and paint the spectacular views over the fields but there was enough to keep the group busy in the grounds and in the well appointed studio at the rear of the Hall. As it happened the weather cleared up when the group went home and the views were spectacular.

I was asked by members of the group if I could demonstrate how to paint mountains in the style of the late Bob Ross using Atelier Interactive acrylic paints instead of oils which he used. Atelier Interactive is a versatile painting medium (and best of all, it’s artists’ quality) which I use for all my classes as it can be used in the same way as a watercolour painting and an oil painting medium (but without the use of oil or solvents) and you can even “Re-Think” how you want to use the paint hours, days or even weeks after paint has been applied, I highly recommend it to all my students. …The demonstration you see below took less than thirty minutes to complete.

The accommodation, food and service were all excellent. If you would like to join me on future painting breaks or painting holidays at Higham Hall or anywhere else please feel free to email me with your request…the photographs you see below are in Higham Hall and the surrounding vicinity
